I bought one of these the other day. Everything I’ve read online says “it will probably rot and die before it blooms because it hates you”, but I’m hoping it will decide to cooperate.

The Tiburon Mariposa Lily, Calochortus tiburonensis,

… is a rare plant endemic to Marin County, California. Only a single population is known from serpentine soils on Ring Mountain, Tiburon Peninsula on the northwestern side of San Francisco Bay.

While the land on which it grows is protected, the limited distribution of this species puts it at high risk of extinction due to random events like drought or wildfires. It is also threatened by damage from off-leash dogs, hikers, cyclists, wildflower collectors, and other vandals.

Hairy Yellow Succulent Flower

I grew this guy in my back yard. I planted a cutting three years ago and its going strong. I’m not sure what kind of succulent it is, but its a bit like an ice plant but has longer leaves and flower spikes instead of individual ones. And it climbs things by sprouting wood-like roots mid stem. Its pretty much amazing.

The only plant at the Bancroft Garden that was more popular with the bees than the Puya berteroniana was this Xanthorrhoea sp. There were so many blissed out bees, all types and sizes. Remarkable
